Some Simple Checks
If you find your stairlift isn’t working sometimes it can be a simple issue that can be resolved quickly. Here are some simple checks to try before contacting us.
1. Check the Battery & power
When a stairlift stops working it’s usually a problem with the power.
- Ensure the on/off switch and the master power switch is turned on.
- Check the key switch and turn it to the “on” position.
- If the stairlift is beeping continuously, the battery may need charging. Bring the lift down to the charge point and leave it there for a while. If the stairlift refuses to charge or holds charge for only a short time, it might require professional repair.
2. Clear the Stairlifts Path
If your stairlift stops before reaching the top or bottom, something may be obstructing its path.
Stairlifts have safety sensors that prevent movement if they detect an object in the way.
- Check for and remove any obstacle on the track.
- Wipe down the sensors, as dust build-up can trigger them.
3. Try Resetting Your Stairlift
A simple reset may solve the issue:
- Turn the power off and wait for 30 seconds.
- Turn it back on and check if the stairlift resumes normal operation.

Signs You Might Need a New Stairlift
Stairlifts are built to last, but like any piece of equipment, they have a lifespan. If you find your stairlift not working or is frequently breaking down or showing signs of wear, it may be time to consider replacing it. Here are some key signs that indicate you might need a new stairlift.
One of the biggest indicators that your stairlift needs replacing is frequent breakdowns and repairs. If your stairlift has stopped working multiple times in a short period or requires constant maintenance, it may be more cost-effective to invest in a new one rather than continue spending money on repairs.
Another clear sign is strange noises or unusual movements. If your stairlift makes grinding, squeaking, or clunking sounds when in motion, this could indicate that its components are wearing out. Similarly. if the lift moves jerkily or shudders while operating, the motor or track might be deteriorating, posing a potential safety risk.
Older stairlifts can also become difficult to maintain due to a lack of replacement parts. Manufactures eventually discontinue older models, making it harder-and more expensive- to find the necessary parts of repairs. If your engineer struggles to source components or if repairs are becoming too costly, replacement may be the better option.
Safety is always a top priority, and if your stairlift starts losing reliability or key safety features, it may no longer be suitable for use. If it hesitates before moving, stops unexpectedly, or doesn’t feel as secure as it once did, it’s worth considering a new model with updated safety features for your peace of mind.
Additionally, your mobility needs may have changed over time. If you now require additional support, such as a powered swivel seat, a wider seat, or extra safety features, your current stairlift may no longer meet your needs. Upgrading to a model that offers better accessibility can make a huge difference in comfort and convenience.
Finally, the age of your stairlift plays a crucial role. Most stairlifts have a lifespan of around 10–15 years with regular maintenance. If yours is approaching or exceeding this age, it may not be as reliable as it once was. Newer models often provide better efficiency, improved technology, and enhanced safety features, making an upgrade a worthwhile investment.
