Buying a Stairlift

Buying a stairlift

What types of stairlifts are available?

We offer a wide range of stairlifts, including Straight, Curved, and Outdoor Stairlifts to suit different homes and mobility needs. We also provide specialist solutions such as Standing Stairlifts, slimline models for narrow staircases, heavy-duty stairlifts, and reconditioned stairlifts for a more cost-effective option. Our team will always recommend the most suitable solution for your staircase and requirements.

How much does a stairlift cost?

The cost of a stairlift varies depending on the type, model, and complexity of installation. On average, a new straight stairlift starts from £1,900, while curved stairlifts start from £3,000. Reconditioned stairlifts are also available starting at £1,800.

Do I need a stairlift?

If you are struggling with the stairs due to mobility issues, pain, injury, or reduced confidence, a stairlift can help you move safely and independently around your home. Our team can carry out a free assessment to advise on the most suitable option for your needs.

What features do I need on a stairlift?

This will depend on your mobility needs, staircase layout, and personal preferences. Features can include powered swivel seats, folding rails, powered footrests, perch seats, slimline designs, and safety sensors. Our team will recommend the most suitable features during your survey.

Can I have different stairlift colours?

Yes, many stairlift models are available in a range of upholstery and rail colours to better suit your home décor and personal preference. Available options will vary depending on the model chosen.

Do I need a manual or powered swivel seat?

A swivel seat helps you get on and off the stairlift safely at the top of the stairs. A manual swivel seat is operated by hand, while a powered swivel seat turns automatically at the push of a button, which can be easier for users with limited mobility or strength.

How much weight can a stairlift take?

Weight limits vary depending on the stairlift model, but many standard stairlifts support between 18 and 25 stone. We also offer heavy-duty models designed for higher weight capacities.

What is the lifespan of a stairlift?

A stairlift can typically last between 10–15 years or more with regular servicing and maintenance. The lifespan will depend on the model, how often it is used, and how well it is maintained.

Will my stairlift work if I have a power cut?

Yes, most modern stairlifts are battery powered, meaning they will continue to work during a power cut for a number of journeys, as long as the batteries are charged.

Where does Senior Stairlifts operate?

Senior Stairlifts operates nationwide across the UK, with local engineers based throughout the country to provide surveys, installations, servicing, and support.

Installation

Stairlift installation

How long does the installation process take?

The installation of a straight stairlift usually takes a few hours, while a curved stairlift may take longer due to its custom design. Typically, the entire process can be completed within a day.

How quickly can I get a stairlift fitted?

This depends on the type of stairlift required. Straight stairlifts can often be installed within a few days, while curved stairlifts usually take longer due to the custom-made rail. We always aim to install as quickly as possible.

Do stairlifts require any structural changes to my home?

Typical stairlifts do not require major structural changes. They are installed on the staircase rather than the wall, so no extensive modifications are needed. However, a free stairlift assessment is needed to determine any specific requirements.

Do I need permission to get a stairlift installed?

In most cases, no permission is needed to install a stairlift in your home. If you live in a rented property, it is recommended to check with your landlord or housing provider first.

Can a stairlift be fitted to a spiral staircase?

Yes, some curved stairlifts can be custom-made to fit spiral or more complex staircases. A home survey is required to assess the staircase and recommend the most suitable solution.

Can you have a stairlift outside?

Yes, outdoor stairlifts are specifically designed for external steps and are fully weatherproof to withstand rain, cold weather, and changing outdoor conditions.

Warranty & Servicing

Stairlift warranty and servicing

Is there a warranty on stairlifts?

Yes, we provide a 2-year warranty on all our new and reconditioned stairlifts, covering parts and labour (excluding batteries and accidental damage). We also offer a 3-year extended warranty, which includes additional cover for batteries, parts, labour, an annual service, and callouts for extra peace of mind.

How often should I have my stairlift serviced?

We recommend getting your stairlift serviced once a year to maintain optimal safety. Regular servicing can help identify and fix issues before they become major problems. Servicing is completed by our competent engineers, who are highly trained across a wide range of brands including Acorn, Stannah, Handicare, Access (formerly Thyssenkrupp), Platinum Stairlifts, and more.

What should I do if my stairlift stops working?

First check that it is switched on, correctly parked on a charging point, and that there are no obstructions on the track. Many stairlifts will display a fault code or beep to indicate the issue. If the problem continues, contact our team and we can help troubleshoot over the phone or arrange for an engineer to visit.

Repairs

What are common issues that require stairlift repairs?

Common issues include power supply problems, battery failures, track obstructions, faulty sensors, malfunctioning control switches, and mechanical wear and tear. Regular maintenance performed by a trained engineer can help prevent many of these issues.

How much does it cost to repair a stairlift?

If your stairlift is not covered by our warranty, we offer a callout service for £185, which covers an engineer visiting to assess the issue. Minor repairs can cost between £50 and £200, while more extensive repairs, such as motor or rail replacements, can range from £200 to £600+, depending on the work required.

How long does it take to repair a stairlift?

Minor repairs can often be completed within an hour or two. The time required depends on the complexity of the issue. While more significant problems may take longer, our repair technicians can provide a more accurate estimate on-site.

Can I perform stairlift repairs myself?

We highly recommend that you do not perform stairlift repairs yourself. Stairlifts are complex machines with safety-critical components. Attempting to carry out repairs yourself could also void any warranties you may have.

Selling & Removing a Stairlift

Selling and removing a stairlift

How do I sell my stairlift?

In the UK, there are companies that will buy your stairlift and provide free removal. Sell My Stairlift offers fair prices for unwanted stairlifts, free removals on purchased stairlifts, and no hidden fees. We can also provide a free valuation and advise whether your stairlift is suitable for buy back, removal, or recycling.

How much can I sell my stairlift for?

The value of a used stairlift depends on several factors including the make and model, age, condition, and whether it is straight or curved. Much of the value lies in the chair, as the rail is bespoke to your staircase and cannot be reused. We offer a free valuation and can advise whether your stairlift is suitable for buy back, removal, or recycling.

Can I remove a stairlift on my own?

We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to remove a stairlift alone. Stairlifts are extremely heavy and can cause injury to anyone not experienced in handling the weight of the seat and carriage. Most buyers will also not purchase a stairlift that has already been removed from the rail, as damage may have occurred during the process that cannot be properly diagnosed.

How long does it take to remove a stairlift?

Stairlifts can take between 2–4 hours to remove depending on the complexity and length of the rail. Each strut holding the rail to the staircase must be carefully detached, so the number of attachment points will affect the overall time. Our removal engineers are highly trained to complete removals swiftly and methodically, ensuring nothing is overlooked.

How quickly can I have an engineer visit to remove my stairlift?

Senior Stairlifts can have a removal engineer visit your home within 24–48 hours, depending on engineer availability. We understand how an unwanted stairlift can affect your household — whether you are reclaiming your space or preparing your home for sale — and will do everything we can to help.
